Building Futures

Building Futures is an immersive and unique one-year program for Grade 10 students. Thanks to a generous partnership with Coventry Homes, Parkland School Division students are able to earn credits towards their diploma while learning by doing.

We also offer Building Futures Apprenticeships, which is an extension of this program and is intended for students who missed the opportunity to complete it in Grade 10, and for students who are exploring the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). Visit the Apprenticeships page for more information.

We Build a House from the Ground Up

Building Futures takes students beyond the traditional classroom. They experience authentic learning from being involved with building a house, while simultaneously earning the necessary credits outlined in Alberta's programs of study.

As the year progresses, students move on-site and into the garage of the house they built. They continue construction and their academic courses (taught by subject-specific teachers) while also contributing to the community by doing special projects.

Coventry Homes provides quality tradespeople who carefully guide students as they work. They help build students’ confidence and skill set to complete work to a professional standard.

Classroom work emphasizes skills mastery involving plenty of hands-on, project-based learning. The program also allows for individualized instruction which creates an environment where students can explore their interests.

By the end of the year, students will have proudly built a home.
