Apprenticeships

Building Futures Apprenticeships is an extension of the Building Futures Grade 10 program and is intended for students who missed the opportunity to complete this program in Grade 10, and for students who are exploring the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). This program exposes students to various Alberta trades, as well as many other vocations within the construction industry, such as design, architecture, real estate, sales, marketing and so much more. For students interested in RAP, this course is a great way to explore what trade to pursue and provides a headstart to their apprenticeship.

This course is available to Grade 11 and 12 students attending Memorial Composite High School, Spruce Grove Composite High School or Connections for Learning interested in pursuing a career in a home building trade.

Program Credits

Students will have the opportunity to participate and earn some or all credits in safety, site prep, concrete, framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, drywall, insulation, taping and mudding, cabinetry installation, floor coverings and finish carpentry.

Program Schedule & Enrolment

The house build begins in September and will be completed in June.

Students can choose to enrol in Building Future Apprenticeships for one semester or for all year. Please note that enrolling all year will provide the students with the experience of building the house from start to finish. Choosing to enrol for one semester impacts the credits students will earn based on the stage of the house build.

Students will enrol in a double block to earn credits in the construction of building a home. Students will be bussed to an on-site home build for an all-morning or all-afternoon opportunity to learn real-life construction skills alongside professional tradespeople with Coventry Homes. When not on the build site, students will complete their theory requirements in the classroom and participate in another class scheduled by their grade coordinator. Students can expect to be on-site building the home with Coventry Homes on average every other day at a minimum.

To register, please contact the grade coordinator at your school. Registration in the program is limited. As such, students that select Building Futures Apprenticeships will be required to complete a short survey and may require an interview prior to enrolment in the program as part of the application process.

Building Future Apprenticeships RAP Head Start

Building Future Apprenticeships provide students with a head start to the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP), for those students choosing to pursue that route.

After completion of the program, students will have the opportunity to continue on as a RAP student with a sponsor from Coventry Homes. Hours accumulated in the Building Future Apprenticeships program will be credited towards the students’ Red Seal Ticket in the trade they choose to pursue an apprenticeship in. The hours credited for their apprenticeship is dependent on the trade that the student chooses to focus on.

Trade Hours Credited to Red Seal Ticket
Plumbing 54 hours
Electrical 54 hours
Carpentry 200 hours
