The Core Program is an alternative education program of choice that serves students in Grades 1-9. Students attend school on a modified schedule receiving Core programming in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science in the morning. During the afternoon, our students either participate in our My PATH program or parent-led learning, in consultation with teachers, to meet the remaining learning outcomes of the Alberta curriculum. This gives parents the flexibility to create a customized curriculum based on student interests as well as needs and abilities when they are not attending Connections For Learning.
Typically, there are multi-graded classrooms depending upon student distribution over the grades. For example, a classroom will be formed when there are enough enrolled students. Conversely, if there are too many enrolled students for a particular multi-graded classroom, interested families will be placed on a waiting list. Our goal is to keep our class sizes smaller with a target population of 20-25 students, but this number may vary depending on grade and class composition.
Parents are required to attend the Annual Parent Orientation Meeting at the start of each school year, and each family is encouraged to take on a volunteering role to enrich the program for students, such as:
- Parent Advisory Committee Roles
- Hot Lunch Program
- Class Project / Event Assistance
- Field Trip Supervision
Please note: Core is an optional program of choice. For this reason, bus students in the Core Program will be subject to school-of-choice transportation fees. For more information, please visit the Fees page within the Transportation section of the PSD website.
